Project Details

I participated in a number of things during my time volunteering in Academic Advising. They include; shadowing appointments, helping at the front desk, doing leadership activities with the ACEs, and helping the advisers plan for an event called "advis-a-palooza" where students could meet with their advisers before they register for classes. I volunteered 9-10 hours per week for a month, and I didn't have to invest any money into my project other than gas to drive to campus. My favorite part of my EDGE project was shadowing appointments. I got to know advisers well this way by being in their offices and seeing the daily tasks they needed to perform.

Project Reflection

Deciding to do my EDGE project in the SUU Academic Advising and Career Center was the best decision for me in regards to gaining work experience. Shadowing and participating in Academic Advising increased my passion to one day help students succeed in their academics as well as make them feel welcome - like my adviser, Katya Konkle, did for me. By simply shadowing appointments, I realized how much of an impact advisers have on students. I've noticed how students put their trust in their advisers to give them the right classes as well as help get them through school. I was able to recognize this on my own as well and it's truly helped me understand the significance of such a humble career. My EDGE project has helped me to heighten my understanding of what it means to be an academic adviser. It's brought me newfound knowledge and motivation to be a leader in the world of academics.

EDGE Project Overview

My project involved volunteering by helping assist the workers in the Academic Advising Department this fall, from September 6, 2017 to October 4, 2017. The reason why I chose to volunteer in the Academic Advising Department was to gain work experience for myself in the future.
I often get asked the question as to why I've chosen to go into Academic Advising. The truth is, about three years ago, I was a Freshman in college who wasn't sure what I would do after I graduated with my English degree. That following year, I received a phone call from my academic adviser at SUU (the school I would of course be transferring to) and she was very helpful and welcoming towards me coming to SUU. I eventually realized that education and helping students was my passion.
When I heard about the EDGE Project, I knew I wanted to involve my project around Academic Advising. Kelly Stephens, the director of Academic Advising, was fortunately very thrilled to have me volunteer in the beginning of the semester.  This opportunity was incredible and I look forward to sharing more of my experiences with my fellow classmates.
